FT open was held yesterday at VSR as usual high winds prevailed.During this event any air rifle irrespective of power or type will participate in one category in a 60 shot event. Targets are at ranges between 10 and 50 meters. The Hit Zones vary from 10, 15, 25 and 40mm.
I the first position James Bugeja scored 48/60 to claim his victory with his Styer LG110 (PCP <12ftlbs) and followed by Wayne Gales 41/60 in the 2nd Palce. Gordon Gouder (Air Arms S400 PCP <12ftlbs)39/60 beats Nazzareno Scorfna (HW100) 39/60 in a shoot off for the 3rd place.

MAAC FT Open Results

As if by coincidence when ever FT competitions are planned the weather seems to follow.
Last Sundays 7th Feb match had to be postponed to 10th Feb due to extreme bad weather.
Today the weather was only a hint better as strong gale force winds prevailed during the match.

Todays FT match consisted of 60 targets. Despite the heavy winds the highest scores were not as bad as one might think. James Bugeja in PCP class scored 40/60 whilst in the Spring Class Stanley Shaw scored 28/60.

The top 3 shooters in the PCP class were James Bugeja with 40/60 following Rene Scorfna and Wayne Galea both with 38/60. The sudden death shoot off between Rene Scorfna and Wayne Galea gave second place to Rene Scorfna.

In the Springer Class no awards were given since the minimum number of shooters was not reached.

The Best Effort medal was given to Dominic Calleja for his excellent score considering that this is the second time for Dominic participation and 1st FT match with a score of 33/60.

MAAC 2009-10 season kicks in.

Today 25th October 2009 MAAC started with the first match for the 2009-2010 season. First on the list was HFT Open event. The event was conducted at the Victoria Shooters range limits of tal-Handaq Qormi. A set up of 20 knock down targets was distributed within the range perimeter.

Although the target ranges were medium to short range they proved difficult for 2 main reasons.
The wind was strong and although it was rather difficult to find a HFT good shooting stance for the freestyle targets and reducers on some targets added to this difficulty when the target looked easy.

A nice number of shooters participated however we urge the members to take part in these events. It is fun to try out different styles of shooting. HFT for shooting HFT any air rifle will do and there is no need of extra expesive scopes. We have 3 different air rifle classes to suit all shooters, PCP's over 15ftlbs, PCP's under 15ftlbs and also a springer class. So next time take your chance you might discover something.

In the under 15ftlbs PCP class the top 3 shooters were Nazzareno Scorfna with with an excellent 32/40 followed closly by Wayne Galea with 31/40 and Dr. Mario Spiteri following at 29/40. Nazzareno earns his first match of the season.

In the over 15ftlbs PCP class James Bugeja brilliantly leaded with 33/40 to earn his first win in this season. In this class David Giardina and Kris Debattista had to dispute a shoot off as both ended with 29/40. The shoot off adapted is sudden death. A reduced target 20mm was shoot in a force 5 cross wind at a distance of approx 15 to 18 meters. The who knocks down the target will win, both will continue until the target is dropped in different HFT positions as assigned by the Range officer.

In this duel Kris was first to shoot in standing unsupported position but the pellets was drifted of the center kill zone. David was next to shoot also in the standing unsupported position. As soon as David squeezed the trigger the plate flattened down. David win a merited second place followed by Kris.

The next match will be Bench rest and takes place on the 8th November 2009. Here we have 2 standard classes PCP under 15ftlbs and PCP over 15ftlbs plus a new surprise. For this year we will also have a springer class called SPRBR20, so something for all. Hope to see you there.

MAAC - Air Rifle Bench Rest - Sunday 10th May 2009

Yesterday MAAC conducted it's second Air Rifle Bench Rest competition for 2009 season. Two air rifle classes were conducted at the Victoria Shooters Range tal-Handaq Qormi, the Low Power class under 15ftlbs and the High Power Class over 15ftlbs both shot at 25m. The wind direction variable NNE to ENE. Wind Speed 6-11 km/h was happily appreciated by the shooters.

Low Power Class under 15ftlbs result.
The 1st place in this class was achieved by Stanley Shaw with Air Arms S400 (Cal.0.22) scoring 231-2x. Following in second place was David Gardina with 228-1x with the a modified Walther (Cal 0.177) and Kris Debattista with 226-0x in the third place with his Air Arms S200 (Cal.0177).
Hi Power Class over 15ftlbs.
Gordon Gouder with his Daystate Mk3 (Cal. 0.22) was the top shooter of the High Power Class with a score of 231-4x. Eric Camilleri followed closely with 230-2x with the Air Arms S410E. The 3rd place in this class and 2nd cup for the day was merited to Kris Debattista with 226-2x.

World Air Rifle Bench Rest Postal Competition.
On Sunday 24th May 2009 MAAC selected shooters will conduct the World Postal Competition Shot at VSR Handaq. The shooters were selected during the qualifiers on 1st February 2009.
3 teams and individual shooter will compete with the other shooters from all over the world.

MAAC HFT OPEN - 26th April 2009

The 2nd Hunter Field Target Open competition for 2009 was held last Sunday 26th April 2009 at the Victoria Shooting Range in Handaq limits of Qormi. A steady south east wind force 5, dominated the day at the Handaq range giving both HP and LP shooters a challenge during this OPEN type match. In Open Matches the shooter is free to use any type of air rifle being PCP or Spring.

Top shooter of the day was James Bugjea with his Daystate MK2 PCP scoring 52 points.

For second and third place, once again a shoot of duel between David Giardina with his Steyr LG110 and Gordon Gouder with his Daystate MK3 FTR as both shooters finished with 51 points.

David and Gordon shot and dropped 5 targets in kneeling and prone positions, the decider then came in the standing shots with gave David the lead and the 2nd place.

MAAC Air Rifle Field Target - 5th April 2009

MAAC held it 2nd FT Match for 2009 today at the Victoria Shooters Range Tal-Handaq Qormi.

Today's FT match was OPEN and as expected 100% of all the competitors (16) competed with Pre Charged Pneumatics air rifles. With power levels varying from 12ftlbs up to 35ftlbs MAAC member competitors take the challenge on a gruesome 30 target course.

The weather was fine except for some NW wind gusts that were prominent for shooters in the second group. Despite this, the match was balanced and all 16 shooter had satisfactory results.

James Bugeja (23/30) took lead of the match ending with 1 point difference over David Gardina (22/30). Alfred Cini made a come back today after sorting some technical problems he encountered earlier this year. Alfred claimed the 3rd place today with as score of 21/30.

MAAC Steel Plate Challenge 15ht March 2009

The Malta Allied Airgunners Club today held its first Air pistol Steel Plate Challenge for 2009 at the Victoria Shooters Range. A number of competitors reported sick this morning and others reported working this Sunday during the week, however 12 air gunners today gave a rest to their air rifles and engaged in this airpistol competition which is gaining it share of popularity. One can see that the air pistol enthusiasts in MAAC are gearing up more seriously for this event and for the new Air Pistol Dynamic Shooting event that is planned and on schedule to kick of in June 2009 .Steve Farrugia 1st & Fastest on the field.

Today weather was perfect, a typical beautiful spring day, hence steel plate stages could be set up according to the established distances. In Steel Plate Challenge each competitor must shoot a set of 5 steel plates, with 3 priorities : Safe Air Pistol Handling, Speed and Accuracy. Each set of steel plates are consists of 4 white plates and 1 yellow stop plate. The shooter will shoot from either a static box 1X1 meter or from multiple boxes. The main rule is shoot white plates and end on yellow. Each stage is shot 3 times, then the average time is calculated for each stage. The max time to shoot a stage is 30 seconds which is also the factor used to determine a hit factor by dividing this 30 second by the average time to complete the stage.

Without doubt the FASTEST on the field was Steve Farrugia, with the fastest strings in Stages 1 and 3 of 5.10 seconds and 4.69 seconds respectivy. Steve Farrugia was the top shooter for the day with an overall Hit Factor of 13.06. David Gardina despite some teething problems kept his position in the top 3 shooters and ended with a Hit Factor of 10.79.

A well merited reward for Rene Scorfna who served as one of today's Range Conducting Officers was the 3rd Place and ended with a Hit Factor of 10.53. The fastest string shooters in Stage 2 were today's RCO's Rene Scorfna and James Bugeja both with 6.62 seconds.

1st March - Field Target Springer Class Competition

The first Field Target Springer competition for 2009 was held last Sunday 1st March at the Victoria Shooting Range in Handaq limits of Qormi. Winds were a moderate south east force 3 to 4, which made shooting much easier when compared to the usual north western winds that are so common at the Handaq range.

Top shooter of the day was Kris Debattista with 18 knock downs from a possible 30. After a very modest two rounds were he hit 9 from a possible 20 knock downs, Debattista stepped up a couple of gears and in the last round almost made straight with 9 out of 10 knock downs to tally up 18/30. This was Debattista's first ever competition victory and first trophy of 2009 after failing to place in the first 3 MAAC competitions of 2009.

For second and third place, once again a shoot of duel between David Giardina and Wayne Galea as both shooters finished with 14/30. A repeat of the latest Hunter Field Target competition, when both these shooters had to resolve first and second place with a shoot off. This time it's for second and third placing. Wayne Galea once again beaten by shoot off specialist David Giardina which for the umpteenth time has shown everyone present how to win a shoot off.

Next MAAC competition event is the Air Pistol Steel Plate Challenge which will take place on Sunday 15th March at the Victoria Shooting Range.

MAAC HFT Result 15th February 2008

Cold, wet and muddy a perfect day for Hunter Field Target. Today MAAC held its 1st 2009 HFT session in accordance to the UKAHFT rules. The shooters need to tackle 40 mm knockdown targets at ranges between 7 and 41 meters some targets are obscured up to 50% by flora or natural objects forcing the shooters to refrain from utilizing their favourite shooting position. In HFT the shooter must evaluate the target distance by calculation then shoot according to the assigned position or use one of the 3 shooting positions allowed in HFT i.e. Standing, Kneeling or prone.

David Gardina and Wayne Galea both had 28 direct hits and 2 face plates giving them a total score of 58/60. David and Wayne then performed what is called a sudden death shoot off. David Gardina placed first. Dr. Paul Soller followed the leaders with 52/60 points, this gave Paul the first trophy for 2009.

1st February - Air Rifle Bench Rest Competition

The top shooters of the day

The first bench rest of the 2009 season took place on Sunday the 1st of February, with mother nature keeping it's appointment with the shooters in force 6 south western winds with gusts up to 50km/h. The top shooters of the day still managed high scores and we still have yet to experience a non windy day for this event to really get close to the top mark of 250/250.

David Giardina - First in Unlimited Class

In the Unlimited Class over 15ft/lbs, David Giardina scored a fine 232/250 with 2x to secure top spot followed by James Bugeja with 226 and 3x. In third place came Ruth Gauci with 224 and 3x, confirming this competition as one of her favourites after winning the same event on her debut a few months ago.

Wayne Galea - First in International Sporter Class

In the International Sporter Class under 15ft/lbs, Wayne Galea grabbed first place with a score of 232/250 and 1x, followed by Dr.Mario Spiteri with 229/250 and 2x and in third place came David Giardina with 224/250 and 4x. This was Wayne Galea's first time on the top of the podium following his third placing in last month's Field Target and seems to have bonded well with his new air rifle.

This event was also a qualifier for the 1st World Air Rifle Bench Rest postal for Sporter Class <15ftlbs.>

The teams and individual shooters will shoot a 3 relay match on the 23rd and 24th of May at the Victoria Shooting Range with all the score sheets being sent to South Africa to be scored together with the rest of the international ERABSF countries' score sheets.

This is all preparation work for 2010 Air and Rimfire BR European and Worlds Open that will be taking place in Pilzen Czech Republic in 2010.

The MAAC kicked off the 2009 season with a classic Field Target competition held at the Victoria Shooting Range limits of Qormi. Despite force 5-6 winds, the end shooting scores did not differ much from usual scores when shooting takes place with force 3-4 winds. This clearly shows a huge improvement as handling such winds is no easy task even for the most experienced shooters. The introduction of state of the art airrifles such as the Steyr LG 110 has also helped obtain such results as the end result clearly shows with the top 3 shooter sporting such an air rifle.

In this event, the ever so common shoot off did not take place as Field Target dominator David Giardina took top placing once again with 22/30 targets followed by the 2 surprises of the day. After winning the recent Unlimited Class Benchrest competition, Dr.Mario Spiteri kept up the rythm in this event to finished in second place with 20/30 and Wayne Galea close with 19/30. This was a first for Galea on the podium after a sensational comeback in the third round with a 10/10 strike after a very modest first 2 rounds.

The next MAAC event will take place on the 1st February with a bench rest competiton. There will be the usuall 2 classes in which one can take part. The Interational Sporter class for air rifles below 15ft/lbs and the Unlimited Class for the high powered over 15ft/lbs.

21st December 2008 - Air Rifle Bench Rest Competition

Sunday 21st December, MAAC held it's final event for 2008 with a bench rest competition. The event was split into 2 classes, International Sporter for air rifles below 15ft/lbs and Unlimited Class for air rifles over 15ft/lbs. For this event, MAAC also had the honor to host the ERABSF (European Rimfire and Air rifle Shooting Federation) President Mr. Carlo Caricato. This was Mr.Caricato's second visit to Malta and be present to a bench rest competition on our island.
For this Bench Rest competition, all procedes collected from this event was entirely donated to L-Istrina and a total of Eur250 was presented on the 27th December for a just cause.

The wind conditions were not as harsh as force 3-4 winds swept the Victoria Shooting Range. The Unlimited Class is not shot anymore at 50m but at 25m so as to be in conform with international standards which now stipulate both classes to be shot at 25m.

First place in the International sporter Class went to David Giardina, with a score of 224/250 and 1x and has reconfirmed his dominance in this class after his third placing in the last Bench Rest competition. Second placing went to Kris Debattista with 218/250 and 0x and in third place Stanley Shaw with 215/250 and 2x.

In the Unlimited Class first place went to Dr.Mario Spiteri with his brand new top notch air rifle Steyr LG 110 High Power with an impressive score of 240/250 and 5x. In second place Stanley Shaw with 237/250 and 1x also with a Steyr LG 110 Field Target version. Third placing went to Kris Debattista with 236/250 and 3x.

14th December 2008 - Hunter Field Target Competition

14th December 2008, MAAC held it's first ever Hunter Field Target competition following it's international affiliation with the UKAHFT (United Kingdom Association for Hunter Field Target). It was a perfect day for such an event with typical british weather sweeping the Victoria Shooting Range at Handaq. Cloudy with rainy showers and force 5 winds.

Hunter Field Target events consist of 10 targets in 10 different lanes of various difficulties and distances. Where as in the traditional Field Target the distances and positions are previously set and known by the shooters from 15m to 50m, in Hunter Field Target distances are from 8m to 40m set at random and unknown by shooters except for the Range Officer in charge of the event. Regarding positions taken for each target, a shooter can decide which 3 of the 4 positions to shoot at each target depending on the position of the target.

Top shooter of the day was James Bugeja who dominated the event from the start with a score of 21 from a possible 30. Bugeja is really starting to show what he is capable of with a great performance after his recent second placing in the 9th November Field Target competition when he only lost first place to David Giardina in a shoot off between the two. Second came Kris Debattista with 18 knock downs. Third placing was a fight till the end between Gordon Gouder and David Giardina. After a very poor start with just 3 knock downs from 9, Gouder bounced back superbly and gained ground quickly in the last part of the competition with 9 knock downs from 11. With a total of 16, Gouder just managed to grab third placing tied with David Giardina. A shoot off was needed to determine third place between the 2 shooters but it was no easy task for Gouder against shoot off specialist David Giardina. In the shoot off, Giardina did what he does best, winning shoot offs with 5 knock downs from 6 with Gouder 3 from 6.

Next MAAC event will be a bench rest competition on the 21st December with all the procedes from the event being donated and presented to L-istrina on the 27th December. The MAAC committe and members appeal to the general public to come over and visit the Victoria Shooting Range limits of Qormi to enjoy the event and give a donation for such a noble cause.

23rd November 2008 - Air Pistol Steel Plate Challenge.

Against all odds with a wind force 8, a total of 12 MAAC members competed in the Air Pistol Steel Plate Challenge. Despite the critical wind conditions one can say that shooters are getting grips with this activity and are improving their results match after match.

9th November - Open Air Rifle Field Target Competition Results

The second Air Rifle Field Target competition this year by MAAC on Sunday 9th November at the Victoria Shooting Range at handaq limits of Qormi was characterised by the force 3 to 4 North Eastern winds which caused considerable difficulty beyond the 35m targets for the competitors present. Forteen shooters took part in this event.

Considering the strong winds, the top two shooters of the day did not disappoint and both scored 22/30 which resulted in a shoot off for first and second place. A shoot off takes place when two or more shooters are tied in score for first, second or third place and shoot the first five targets of the first round. The shooter knocking down the most targets wins. In yesterdays' competition, first place was up for grabs. As usual, David Giardina kept his cool and got the better of James Bugeja by knocking down three of the first four knock downs while James Bugeja failed to knock down the first three consecutive targets. Third place went to Kris Debattista with 18/30.

On another positive note, it is good to mention that the only lady shooter of the event, and her first ever Field Target competition, Ruth Gauci scored a very respectable 14/30 finishing in 5th place.

12th October - Open Air Pistol Steel Plate Challenge

MAAC 1st Air Pistol Steel Plate Challenge - Group Photo

The 3rd competition for 2008 by MAAC on Sunday 12th October 2008 was dedicated entirely to air pistol enthusiasts. In MAAC Steel Plate challenge the shooter is challenged to hit a set up of steel plates at a distance from 5meters to 15meters with a minimum number of shots in the shortest possible time. Easy ? NO!

The targets are arranged in a set up which is called a STAGE. Each STAGE is shot 3 times and the average time for the STAGE is established. That is not all !The targets can be disks of 10cm or 14cm or a rectangular plate of dimensions 20cmx10cm. The targets have a colour code 4 White and 1 Yellow for each STAGE. The shooters starts on a GO! signal shooting the White plates and ending on the Yellow Plate. The last shot hitting the Yellow plate stops the time. Steel Plate is also semi dynamic since the shooter must shoot from shooting boxes, more then one box can be used to push the shooter to takle the targets from two differnet locations. In such a moment the Range Officer will observe the pistol handling technique which could disqualify a competitor.

The STAGE has a maximum execution time of 30sec. If you exceed 30sec the Range Officer will STOP you from completing the stage. This factor which we call MAXIMUM TIME is divided by your average STAGE time to give us what we call a HIT FACTOR for the STAGE. The competition involves 3 STAGES and the total HIT FACTOR from all the STAGES is added up. The Highest HIT FACTOR rules the day.

A total of 15 competitors took part in this event, with various types and pistol setups. The competition was open to all TS-B licenced shooters. The day was ruled by Steve Farrugia with an excelent performance on all the 3 stages (HF 11.58) . Following with a 1.15 hit factor difference (converted to time is more then 30 sec over all), was James Bugeja the Secretary of MAAC (HF10.43) and Mark Cassar from AACTS (HF 10.14).

28th September - Open Air Rifle Bench Rest Competition Results

After Malta's representation in the Milan 2008 World Bench Rest Championships, following which MSSF/MAAC was given the ERABSF affiliation to represent the Bench Rest Shooting discipline in Malta, it was the turn of MAAC, which is the ONLY active airgunning club in Malta, to organize the first Air Rifle Bench Rest Competition under ERABSF representation at National level.

This was held yesterday 28th September in the Victoria Shooting Range limits of Qormi in a cloudy and force 4-5 windy morning. The competition was split into 2 classes. Class A for air rifles with 15ft/lbs or less for the 25m targets and Class B for air rifles with over 15ft/lbs of power for the 50m targets. Pellet calibers permitted in ERABSF competitions are .177, .20 and .22.

Targets consists of 5 sighter targets on the left hand side for sighting and zeroing and 25 points targets. A time limit of 30 minutes is allowed to complete all 25 targets and only 1 shot is permitted in each points target.

Class A 25m was dominated by the only woman shooter Ruth Gauci and 14 year old Carlos Scorfna who scored 234-3x and 228-3x respectevely followed by David Giardina with 225-2x.

Class B 50m winner was Anton Grima with 206-0x with Eric Camilleri scoring 193-0x in second place and James Bugeja placing third with 190-2x.

A big thank you to all those who helped out with the range preperations and hope to see more helping hands in the future as preperations for such competitions take time and effort.
A thank you also goes to the new members that turned up yesterday and we hope you had a good time.

7th September - Open Air Rifle Field Target Competition Results.

The Malta Allied Airgunners Club celebrated the recent approval as an authorized Target Shooter Club Licence for TS-B Airgun shooting sport and the inauguration of the club with it's first match competition on Sunday 7th September 2008 at the Victoria Shooters Range limits of Tal-Handaq Qormi.

The match was an Air Rifle Field Target Match. Field Target is one of the most popular air rifle shooting sports in Europe and the US. In this type of air rifle shooting sports, the shooters have to shoot 30 metal knock down targets from distances of 15 to 50 meters with air rifles. Each target has a "hit zone" of 40mm in diameter. Hitting this zone will drop the target and gains points to the shooter. Hitting any other area surrounding this hit zone is a missed shot. Each target has an assigned shooting position and the sport is governed by international rules.

For this first Air Rifle Field Target (ARFT) match a total of 15 shooters competed.
A very hot day both in temperature and for the first 3 positions of this match.
The match winner is Mr. Alfred Cini who scored 23/30.
The second place was awarded to Mr. David Giardina with a score of 20/30 and in the 3rd place Mr. Eric Camilleri scored 16/30.

Present for this occation were Mr.Saviour Portelli president of the Malta Shooting Sports Fenderation (MSSF) . The Malta Allied Airgunners Club is an affiliated partener with MSSF.
Also present for this event was Mr. Mark Cassar who represented the Association of Arms Collectors and Target Shooters (AACTS).

The next event to be organized by the Malta Allied Airgunners Club is set for Sunday 28th September 2008. The next event is the popular Air Rifle Bench Rest. MSSF have been officially recognized as the official governing body for the European Rimfire and Airrifle Benchrest Shooting Federation (ERABSF) in Malta. The Malta Allied Airgunners Club being promoter of this initiative and affiliated member of MSSF will host Air Rifle Bench Rest shooting matches and championships in accordance to ERABSF rules.
